Akram AL HALABI
Né en 1981 à Majdal-Shams, dans cette partie du Golan syrien occupé par Israël, Akram Al Halabi commence par se former à Bait Al Fan puis à l’académie d’été de Darat Al Funun en Jordanie. Il part ensuite étudier à l’Académie des Beaux-arts de Damas dont il ressort diplômé en 2005. Grâce à une bourse, il intègre en 2007 l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Vienne, dont il obtient le diplôme avec félicitations en 2012. Durant cette période, il profite d’un échange avec l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Umeå en Suède où il séjourne entre 2010-2011.
Snowflakes (2009-2012), qui lui vaudra les félicitations du jury, est un travail sur l’identité. Dans un jeu de miroir, l’artiste interroge les personnes rencontrées au hasard des rues. Invité à se définir à cet instant précis, chaque passant note ou dessine sur de fins rouleaux de papier qui seront au final suspendus dans l’espace d’exposition.
Témoin impuissant des évènements qui secouent la Syrie à partir de 2011, Akram Al Halabi s’empare des images insoutenables qui lui parviennent. Face à l’avalanche médiatique, il travaille sur des captures d’écran qu’il met à distance en les convertissant en noir et blanc et les annotant en écriture digitale. La description la plus laconique possible (bouche, joue, fenêtre…) se superpose à l’image des corps inanimés, dénonciation de l’horreur en cours. Repostant ces images transformées, l’artiste donne ainsi entre 2011 et 2013 sa réponse à l’actualité.
Peintre également, Akram Al Halabi produit depuis 2016 de grands formats réunis sous le nom de Metamorphosis. L’hybridation ou le dédoublement du sujet semble en effet le dénominateur commun de ces portraits ou autoportraits où l’artiste donne corps à des peurs qui rejoignent parfois certains mythes de son enfance.
Basé à Vienne où il vit et travaille, Akram Al Halabi manie toutes les techniques (dessin, peinture, photographie, vidéo, installation…) qu’il déploie au fil de ses séries.
Il expose régulièrement en Autriche et partout dans le monde. Il a participé notamment aux expositions New Future au Musée du Palazzo, à Bologne, en Italie (2013) ; Creating Common Good, au Kunsthaus de Vienne (2015) ; ou encore Diaspora Now, au Museum of Fine Arts de Gifu au Japon (2017). Ses œuvres figurent dans de nombreuses collections privées du British Museum, à Londres, et du Kupferstichkabinett, à Vienne.
Born in 1981 in Majdal-Shams, in the portion of the Syrian Golan that was occupied by Israel, Akram Al Halabi began his training at Beit El Fan and then at the Darat Al Funun summer academy in Jordan. He then studied at the Damascus Faculty of Fine Arts, graduating in 2005. He was awarded a scholarship by the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in 2007, from which he graduated with honours in 2012. In 2010-2011, he benefited from an exchange with the Fine Arts Academy of Umeå, Sweden.
His project Snowflakes (2009-2012), which earned the jury’s congratulations, is a work on identity. In a sort of mirror game, the artist spoke with people he happened to meet on the street. When asked to define themselves at that precise moment, the passersby drew pictures on thin pieces of paper, which were then hung in the exhibition space.
A helpless witness to the events that tore Syria apart beginning in 2011, Akram Al Halabi seized on the horrific images that reached him. Confronted with a media avalanche, he worked with screen shots, from which he distanced himself by converting them into black and white, and annotating them digitally. The most laconic descriptions possible (mouth, cheek, window…) are superimposed on images of inanimate bodies, in a condemnation of the terrible events that were taking place. The artist responded to the events that took place from 2011 to 2013 by posting these transformed images.
Also a painter, since 2016 Akram Al Halabi has produced large works grouped together under the name of Metamorphosis. Hybridisation, or the multiplication of the subject, appears to be the common denominator in these portraits and self-portraits, in which the artist gives shape to his fears, some of which were related to myths and stories from his childhood.
Now living and working in Vienna, Akram Al Halabi employs many techniques (drawing, painting, photography, video, installation…), which he uses throughout his series.
He exhibits regularly, both in Austria and around the world. He has participated in exhibitions such as the New Future exhibition in the Museo di Palazzo in Bologna, Italy (2013); Creating Common Good at the Vienna Kunsthaus (2015); and Diaspora Now at the Museum of Fine Arts in Gifu, Japan (2017). His works may be found in many private collections, and in the British Museum in London, and the Kupferstichkabinett in Vienna.
