Ella DE BURCA
Née en 1986 à Dublin, Ella De Burca vit aujourd’hui entre sa ville natale et Bruxelles. Après des études d’art à Dublin suivies de plusieurs résidences dont le Banff Center au Canada, AIR à Anvers ou HISK à Gand, elle s’inscrit pour un doctorat en pratique artistique à l’Université de Louvain en Belgique. Sa recherche doctorale et ses performances récentes portent sur la façon d’être spectateur, ou l’étude du comportement du spectateur comme acteur engagé dans le déroulement de l’œuvre. Plus généralement, son travail, à l’intersection du théâtre, de la poésie, de la sculpture et de la performance explore la construction du sens, un peu à la manière d’un Beckett féminin.
Depuis sa participation à l’exposition ReBuilding Utopia, à la biennale de Venise de 2013, ses dernières expositions personnelles ont eu lieu en 2018 en Californie, à l’UC Gallery de l’Université de Californie avec Flat as the Tongue Lies et à l’Adobe Backroom de San Francisco avec We Only Want the Earth. En 2017, elle expose au Wurttembergischer Künstverein de Stuttgart, en Allemagne et avec Post-Peace au Nest, à La Haye, en Hollande.
Born in Dublin in 1986, today Ella De Burca divides her time between her native city and Brussels. After studying art in Dublin and doing several artists’ residencies, including at the Banff Center in Canada, AIR in Antwerp, and the HISK in Ghent, she began doctoral studies in artistic practices at Louvain University in Belgium. Her doctoral research and recent performances examine what it means to be a spectator and study the behaviour of the spectator, as a player who is engaged in the work’s progression. Generally speaking her work, which blends theatre, poetry, sculpture, and performance, explores the construction of meaning, somewhat like a female Beckett.
Since she took part in the exhibition ReBuilding Utopia at the 2013 Venice biennale, her latest solo exhibitions have been in California in 2018, at the UC Gallery of the University of California with Flat as the Tongue Lies, and at the Adobe Backroom in San Francisco with We Only Want the Earth. In 2017 she exhibited at the Wurttembergischer Künstverein in Stuttgart, Germany and with Post-Peace at the Nest, in The Hague, Holland.
