Khaled DAWWA

Born in 1985 in Myssiaf in Western Syria, Khaled Dawwa graduated from the sculpture department of the Damascus Faculty of Fine Arts in 2007. In his end-of-studies project, entitled L’Attente, one can already discern the figures that would be predominant in his future artistic work. One also senses the importance of socio-political themes, which have continued to develop and appear in all his work as the duality opposing The People and The Authorities. In the current context, as great social and political changes are taking place in all Arab countries, including Syria, Khaled Dawwa continues to reflect on the role and the impact of art in people’s lives. He hopes that the themes of his work, which employs simple and sometimes traditional techniques, will be meaningful for Arab viewers and will provoke a reaction. In early 2011, Khaled Dawwa played an active role in the creation and establishment of the Al Bustan workshop in Damascus, but in 2013 he had to flee to Lebanon. He nevertheless continued his artistic activity, posting his work on his Facebook page (Clay&Knife). In late 2014 he settled in France where he was able to venture beyond the virtual realm and to take part again in public activities. While he has continued to explore socio-political themes, his vision has become more global, as can be seen in his solo exhibitions Compressé (2015) and Debout! (2017). He has also taken part in group exhibitions in France and Europe. Khaled Dawwa currently lives in Paris, where he has a workshop.
