Majd ABDEL HAMID
Majd Abdel Hamid est un artiste visuel originaire de Palestine. Il est né à Damas en 1988. Il est actuellement basé entre Beyrouth et Ramallah. Il est diplômé de l'Académie des arts de Malmö, Suède (2010) et a également étudié à l'Académie internationale d'art en Palestine (2007-2009).
Il travaille dans une grande variété de médias, notamment la vidéo, l'installation, le dessin et la sculpture, à travers lesquels il explore les thèmes de l'identité nationale et du traumatisme. Sa pratique artistique est ancrée dans le geste lent, répétitif et performatif, notamment la broderie et le point de croix sur supports en tissu, comme un contrepoids à la production d'images numériques à grande vitesse et aux pixels.
"L'artiste palestinien Majd Abdel Hamid travaille principalement par le biais de broderies à petite échelle, souvent abstraites et colorées, utilisant des matériaux simples et humbles travaillés avec une grande délicatesse. En tant que brodeur autodidacte, les œuvres de Hamid sont le fruit d'un acte de fabrication lent et laborieux, conçues comme des "sculptures dans le temps" plutôt que comme des démonstrations d'habileté virtuose.
Les œuvres cousues à la main ont un caractère artisanal, voire amateur. Chacune est un enregistrement de ses propres d'imperfections, d'hésitations et d'omissions qui laissent visible le tissu brut du support. Les motifs - souvent inachevés - semblent provenir de l'histoire de l'art moderne, des œuvres monochromes à l'abstraction géométrique et à l'expression. Parfois, les motifs figuratifs évoquent des scènes de documentaires d'actualité ou des portraits, reconstitués point par point, comme pixellisés. L'œuvre de Majd Abdel Hamid englobe à la fois une abstraction radicale et une position politique militante et offre une réflexion profonde et ouverte sur le rôle de l'artiste en tant que médiateur des questions sociales, par le biais d'une pratique qui ne se limite pas à l'art, à travers une pratique tour à tour compulsive, thérapeutique et résiliente."

Le travail de Majd Abdel Hamid a fait l'objet de nombreuses expositions collectives, notamment au Krognoshuset Lund en Suède (2016), à l'Institut d'art moderne de Valence en Espagne (2018), et au le centre culturel Halil Saakini en Palestine (2018).
Il a participé à plusieurs résidences et ateliers internationaux, dont "March Project" (Sharjah Art Foundation, 2015), "Former West" (Berlin, Allemagne, 2013) et "Truth is Concrete" (Granz, Autriche, 2012). Hamid a travaillé en résidence à la Cité internationale des arts de Paris en 2009. Il a été finaliste du prix du jeune artiste de l'année, décerné par la Fondation A.M. Qattan en 2008, 2010 et 2012.
Majd Abdel Hamid is a visual artist from Palestine. He was born in Damascus in 1988, and is currently based between Beirut and Ramallah. He graduated from Malmö Art Academy, Sweden (2010) and attended the International Academy of Art in Palestine (2007-2009). He works in a broad variety of media, including video, installation, drawing and sculpture, through which he explores themes of national identity and trauma. His artistic practice is rooted in the slow, repetitive, performative gesture, including embroidery and cross-stich on fabric supports, as a counterbalance to high-speed digital image production and pixels.
“Palestinian artist Majd Abdel Hamid works chiefly through the medium of small-scale, often abstract and colorful embroideries, employing simple, humble materials worked with great delicacy. As a self-taught embroiderer, Hamid’s works are the fruit of a slow, laborious act of making, conceived as “sculptures in time” rather than demonstrations of virtuosic skill.
The hand-stitched works are artisanal, even amateur in feel. Each is a record of its own imperfections, hesitations, and omissions that leaves visible the raw fabric of the support. The
motifs – often unfinished – seem to derive from the history of modern art, from monochrome works to geometric abstraction and expressionism. Occasionally, figurative motifs evoke
scenes from documentary news footage, or portraits – reconstituted stitch by stitch, as if pixelated. Majd Abdel Hamid’s work encompasses both radical abstraction and an activist political stance, and offers a profound, open-ended reflection on the artist’s role as a mediator of social issues, through a practice that is by turns compulsive, therapeutic, and resilient.”

Majd Abdel Hamid's work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions, including at Krognoshuset Lund in Sweden (2016), the Valencia Institute of Modern Art in Spain (2018), and
the Halil Saakini Cultural Center in Palestine (2018).
He has taken part in several international residencies and workshops, including "March Project" (Sharjah Art Foundation, 2015), "Former West" (Berlin, Germany, 2013) and "Truth is Concrete" (Granz, Austria, 2012). Hamid worked in residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris in 2009. He was a finalist for the Young Artist of the Year Award, presented by the A.M.
