Megan Leigh HEILIG
Née en 1983 à Nelspruit en Afrique du Sud, Megan Leigh Heilig a grandi à Johannesburg. Diplômée du Bachelor in Fine Art (BFA) de l’Université de Witwatersrand en 2015, elle poursuit à l’Université de Cape Town par un master qu’elle obtient en 2017 avec félicitations. En 2019, elle est en résidence au Higher Institute of Fine Art (HISK) de Gand, en Belgique.
L’activisme est au cœur de son travail qui ne recule devant ni la provocation ni la mise à nu pour aborder la question du genre, de l’homosexualité féminine, de l’exclusion et de l’appartenance, ou de l’histoire coloniale et postcoloniale. Partant le plus souvent d’une expérience personnelle, l’artiste développe une réflexion plus large englobant des considérations sociopolitiques. L’installation vidéo, le film, la photographie, la performance sont aujourd’hui ses mediums privilégiés. The Politics of Choice and the Possibility of leaving (2019) est une installation vidéo où l’artiste dévoile sa situation à la veille de son départ pour la Belgique, quittant sa compagne qui, de son côté, doit retourner dans son pays d’origine, la Namibie, où l’homosexualité est un crime. A Record of Things Left Unsaid (2019) s’attache au monument à la gloire de Leopold II, à Ostende, en Belgique, pour interroger le rapport ambigu au passé colonial. Sa dernière vidéo en date, It’s Where You Find Yourself (2020) documente à travers de nombreux témoignages le monde de la nuit queer en Afrique du Sud, et les nombreuses barrières économiques, raciales et sociales qui s’y retrouvent.
Dès ses débuts, Megan Leigh Heilig accède à la scène internationale. Elle participe en 2016 à la deuxième Biennale de Kampala, et en 2017 à l’International Video Art House de Madrid (IVAHM). En 2018, elle expose en Belgique dans le cadre du Queer Arts Festival d’Anvers et participe à l’exposition Somewhere In Between at au BOZAR à Bruxelles, puis en 2019 à l’exposition Failures of Cohabitation présentée au MHKA d’Anvers et à la 21e Biennale d’art Contemporain Art Sesc_Videobrasil | Imagined Communities, au Brésil.

After receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree from the University of Witwatersrand in 2015, she pursued her studies at the University of Cape Town and in 2017 obtained her master’s degree with honours. In 2019 she was in residency at the Higher Institute of Fine Art (HISK) in Ghent, Belgium.
Activism lies at the heart of her work, which does not shirk from provocation or audacity in its examination of questions of gender, female homosexuality, exclusion and belonging, and in which colonial and postcolonial history plays an important role. Often prompted by her personal experiences, the artist develops a wide field of reflection that encompasses socio-political considerations. Today her favoured media include video installations, film, photography, and performance. The Politics of Choice and the Possibility of Leaving (2019) is a video installation in which the artist reveals her own situation as she was preparing to leave for Belgium and was leaving her partner, who was about to return to her own country, Namibia, where homosexuality is a crime. A Record of Things Left Unsaid (2019) addresses the monument to Leopold II in Ostend, Belgium, questioning an ambiguous relationship to the colonial past. Her latest video, It’s Where You Find Yourself (2020) documents queer nightlife in South Africa, and the many economic, racial, and social barriers that exist there, by means of numerous interviews.
Megan Leigh Heilig quickly gained recognition on the international scene. In 2016 she took part in the second Biennale in Kampala, and in 2017 she participated in the International Video Art House of Madrid (IVAHM).
